SAHAGÚN
It is situated on the shore of the river Cea, south-east of León province. The region has a population of around 2500 inhabitants habitants and has a long and rich history related to Way of Santiago Saint James´ Way.
It borders Valladolid and Palencia provinces, which is called “tierra de Campos”. Travellers are required to pass by whether they come by car or by train as it is a natural frontier between Castilla and León.
The area survives mainly on the primary sector, agriculture and farming, combined with the service sector. The touristic sector is becoming more important due to Sahagun´s ideal location based in the middle of Way to Santiago.
The geographical situation of the villa in the Via Trajana has turned it into a birthplace of kings, saints and wise men. In Roman times it enjoyed a wide activity thanks to its incredible location in the Via Trajana between Legio VII and Italy( the Via which would take you to Astorga, Zaragoza and Tarragona).

San Lorenzo Church
San Lorenzo Church, entirely built of brick in the first half of XIII century, is another jewel of Facundino Romanesque style.


“La Virgen del Puente”
It is also worthwhile seeing “La Virgen del Puente” Chapel, on the French Way, from the XIII century as it is the first sanctuary in León’s Jacobean Route dedicated to the Virgin Mary.


El Camino de Santiago
Sahagún is located on one of the most outstanding routes since the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela became so popular around the High Middle Ages. It constitutes the First Stage of the Way within the province of Leon.
